Barter Books is one of the coolest places on the planet. Sadly their website is shocking but it is the home of ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ which is pretty sweet. Often named as one of the best book shops in the UK (telegraph), Barter Books lets you bring in old books and collect credit to spend in store – this has been VERY useful in fueling my lady bird book collection.
Here’s my top 10 things to do while you’re there…
Enjoy the entrance lounge – the alcove on the right now has tea and biscuits.
sit by the open fire in the old waiting room and admire the cool literature themed chandelier.
When you get bored looking at the light fittings, why not have a game of chess?
Chess making you thirsty? Have a cup of tea from the cafe (and a piece of cake) or choose from one of the other 3 areas for eating such as the Red Room.
When you’re in the Red Room – have a look at this painting which shows a Royal Visit when the Station was still being used.
Obviously you don’t want to miss watching the train going around the top of the shelves.
then you need to purchase something – why not get a retro copy of the Dandy?
Or you could buy one of the many (some slightly kitch) gifts based on the ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ poster.
don’t forget to have a read of a first edition of something (just to say you have…)
Lastly, just wander up and down the ailes of books taking in the amazing smell and browsing through all the classics.
